The eighth IFIP World Conference on Computers in Education (WCCE 2005) is an IFIP event hosted by the Computer Society of South Africa in association with IFIP TC 3 (Technical Committee – Computers in Education).

WCCE 2005 will explore the use of Information and Communication Technologies in Education and the Teaching of Informatics. The conference will be held at the University of Stellenbosch just outside Cape Town, South Africa and will provide an opportunity for participants to:

• review progress since WCCE 2001

• report on successful (and unsuccessful) ICT projects in Education

• predict trends for the future

It will be a conference for everyone involved in education and training with an interest in learning more about the potential for ICT in education. WCCE 2005 will be of interest to both beginners and experienced practitioners who wish to update their knowledge and skills.
The conference will deal with innovative ideas, pilot experiments, Large-scale projects and national policies.

The conference aims to provide a historical perspective, as well as a vision of the future – thus an assessment of what has, or has not, worked well, in addition to the sharing of where current research efforts and other actions might lead us in the future.

We are seeking contributions to a range of activities. You are invited to send in ideas for:

• Presenting a Paper
• Giving a Demonstration
• Presenting a Poster
• Presenting a workshop
• Presenting a tutorial

An International panel of experts will referee all abstracts submitted. The International Programme Committee will build the conference structure. The pre-conference publication for all attendees will contain an abstract describing the content of each selected contribution. Each attendee will also receive a CD with the full text of the papers and presentation material.

ICOOL 2005 will serve as a multi-disciplinary forum for discussion and reflection on activities and projects related to Computer–Mediated Pedagogies & Communication (CMCP), Information and Communication Technologies for the Development of Education (ICT4DE) and Innovation & Knowledge Creation in Education, with a particular emphasis on sustainability and mainstreaming of innovations from the pilot stage to a real life scale.
