Establishing the Diversity & Inclusion Process Through Emotional Intelligence

Joseph Machicote, USA

Objectives:

  • Discuss the role emotional intelligence plays in the development of inherent bias, and the role that bias can have on the workplace leader’s decision making ability.
  • Develop strategies to use emotional intelligence to create an ethical, diverse, inclusive workplace culture.
  • Examine the role emotional intelligence plays in growing the bottom line by using strategies to market products to new, untapped, multicultural consumers.

Abstract:

Diversity is the process of creating an inclusive, positive work environment that is conducive to productivity.

Employees leave for work every day with an expectation of what the workplace holds for them. This expectation is created through the tone of the environment that is created by the leader. If the tone is negative, inconsistent, threatening or disrespectful, the employee may show up to work, but productivity is impeded. If the workplace is engaging, progressive and inclusive, the employee is more likely to be loyal to the organization and leader, and thus be more productive. In this session we explore emotional intelligence leadership skills that lead to the creation of a diverse and inclusive environment and give the leader a tool kit and awareness of their own behaviours and how those behaviours impact productivity and the bottom line daily.
