SEMAT: SOFTWARE ENGINEERING METHOD & THEORY

Chair: Bertrand Meyer, Chair of Software Engineering, ETH Zurich

Semat is an initiative (led by Ivar Jacobson, Bertrand Meyer and Richard Soley) intended to re-found software engineering on a rigorous basis.

The Semat effort combines the best of existing methods and practices by identifying a kernel of software engineering "universals" and composition techniques. Many world-class leaders in software methodology have become Semat signatories, and over a thousand professionals have signed up as supporters.

The Semat effort is described at http://www.semat.org; the site also includes a list of signatories and supporters, as well as information on how to participate, starting with becoming a supporter.

The ICSE community is essential to Semat. The Semat workshop at ICSE is intended to explain to the community what Semat is about and to elicit feedback and participation. Schedule:

1. Presentation of Semat goals.
2. Report on the foundational Semat meeting (Zurich, March 2010).
3. Discussion of software engineering essentials.
4. Future steps and ways to participate.
